What it is and how you use it Bit.ly link shortener in 2018
Bit.ly link shortener is a great tool, but not the only tool but I find it really useful as part of my social media strategy and process.
Everyone knows the value of shorter URLs. If you don’t, then it is simply that they are easier to type. When sharing Hyperlinks via email facebook etc then it isn’t much of a concern, If a user just needs to click on a link then having a descriptive link is more useful than worrying about the length of it.
But until Instagram allows clickable links users have to manually copy the link and from the app, this is no longer possible. Twitter have their own link shortening service, but they now count all URLs as 23 Characters regardless of length so it is not as important as it once was. Most Automation tools like Buffer, also have their own link shortener service. But all with all these link shortening tools there is a problem…
They just give you a random sequence like bit.ly/5hT8zr. Bit.ly allows branded and customizable links as a PRO service but even using the free service you can greatly improve the appearance of your bit.ly links http://bit.ly/SMLBIZKIT and make them super relevant. Whether using Instagram or twitter these links look so much better. Like this one for my latest FREE eBook Top 5 Online Business Models http://bit.ly/Top5BizModel. You can get it now, by clicking the link.
I used the link http://bit.ly/Top5BizModel the link Bitly automatically assigned it was http://bitly.com/2wQKBfg and the link I was shortening was https://mailchi.mp/bf11aeb90d7f/top-5-online-business-models-ebook Which link looks better?
There is a neat trick that will easily reveal the original URL – if you want to check before you click on it. Just as a ‘+’ at the end of the short link and bitly.com will display a page that shows the full original URL .
But that is not all bit.ly does as a creator of the Bitly link, with a free account, stats on the number of clicks for each link in a nice looking dashboard. There are many places you can get these stats from, but checking your latest post on bit.ly to see the number of clicks is probably the easiest.
